How Dysport® Works

Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport® is an injectable derived from the botulinum neurotoxin, the substance that is at the root of botulism. However, when administered in small amounts and in a purified form, this toxin can efficiently and effectively treat the formation of wrinkles. Once Dysport® is injected, the solution relaxes the muscles and stops them from contracting excessively, decreasing wrinkles.

Dysport® is administered at several strategic points in the target area. The solution works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles where wrinkles are present. Ultimately, the injectable stops the signal going from the nervous system into the muscle. This process prevents the muscle from contracting. While you’ll still be able to perform facial expressions, the specific muscle area underneath the skin will be relaxed.

Over time, without muscle contractions, the skin should be able to smooth itself out. This will offer you a natural youthfulness without adding additional volume to your features. Recovery from Dysport®

Dysport® is a minimally invasive procedure, which means the potential for downtime is very low. Most patients can return to their daily routine right after getting the injections. However, your skin will be sensitive, so you should stay out of direct sunlight for a few days. Also, you should wear sunblock to protect your skin if you have to go outside.

You can expect side effects like swelling, redness, bruising, and tenderness. Most of these effects disappear within one to two days, but the bruising may linger for a few more days. Some patients may also experience headaches. Infection is rare but possible, especially if you are prone to touching your face. Refrain from doing so, as pressure can also cause the Dysport® to migrate.

You should also avoid strenuous exercise during the first few days, as this can cause irritation and bruising to the skin. Additionally, hot showers and baths should be steered clear of to avoid inflammation. Moreover, you should not take aspirin before and after the procedure, as doing so can worsen the bruising.

Dysport® Results

Dysport® is made from smaller particles compared to BOTOX® Cosmetic, which means that Dysport® spreads much quicker in the skin. This allows you to see speedier results. In fact, most patients notice the first improvements within three to four days. However, you will want to keep in mind that it can take some time for the muscles and skin to relax completely, so the final results can take up to two weeks to actually show.

Once settled, the effects of your Dysport® treatment should last for around three months, after which your creases may return. Dysport® does not permanently stop the wrinkle reduction process but gives you a head start to help you take care of your skin. An excellent way to postpone aging and increase the longevity of Dysport® is to use anti-aging skincare, especially medical-grade products.

You can schedule maintenance sessions at least three times a year for the best effects. However, you should not get the procedure done less than three to four months apart, as this can cause you to develop a resistance to Dysport®.
